I am 17 and have fully comprehensive cover on my mini with insure2drive. After looking around it seems you need to check your policy to see if you can drive someone else's car regardless of whether your fully comp or not.

After checking the worded policy on insure2drives' website I found this but i'm still confused

"39 DRIVING OTHER CARS EXTENSION"

Where cover is provided by the effective Certificate of Insurance, the Insurer will indemnify you
while personally driving, with the permission of the owner, any insured vehicle not owned by you
or hired to you under a hire purchase agreement or leased to you under a leasing agreement or
provided to you as a courtesy car and not owned or hired or lent to you by your employer or
partner.

The Insurer will not be liable under this endorsement where the insured vehicle specified in the
current Schedule, which forms part of this Policy, has been disposed of or has become the
subject of a total loss.

Note: Cover is not provided:

a) for loss or damage to the car you are driving
b) if you are covered by any other policy of insurance to drive the car
c) if the vehicle is being used outside the territorial limits of this Policy
d) unless a current and valid policy of insurance is in force for the vehicle being
driven under this section of this Policy
e) for recovery of any vehicle which has been impounded by any police or local
authority

Soooo this means I can right? :withstupid:

says you can? I'm just wondering if anyone can figure out what mine is telling me  from what I've translated it seems I am allowed to drive a privately owned car with permission, but I'm confused by the "cover is not provided for damage to the car" bit :S

With admiral I had to b 25, and I've never heard of any insurance company giving more than 3rd party cover. So the car you're driving wouldn't have any damage covered. Which is why you need permission.

hows about ringing the insurance company?
You get caught driving without insurance its your fault. Saying somebody on a forum said you could won't get cover

So even their insurance would not cover any damage?

Yeah I will be phoning them tomorrow to check, wouldn't do it unless I was 100% sure, and it's nothing important just incase need to drive my parents car at any point :)

Looks to me like you can drive an insured vehicle not owned by you/partner employer or a hire/lease vehicle. You will be covered for third party only so the car you are driving will not be repaired if damaged in any accident you are held liable.

I would check with the insurer though regarding your age as like others have said there maybe additional restrictions. If there are, they should however be in the small print somewhere.

If in any doubt don't drive another car till you've checked :-)

Where cover is provided by the effective Certificate of Insurance....

What does your certificate of insurance say? The whole of this clause 39 is only valid if your certificate indicates that it is.

My certificate has a whole paragraph that begins, " The policyholder may also drive with the owner's permission a car not owned by the policyholder..." It goes on to say much of what your clause 39 says but also says that the other car must have some sort of valid insurance in force.

In all the policies I've ever seen cover is limited to the legal minimum, ie: third party only, meaning that damage to the car you are driving is not included at all. Of course, if you're not to blame for any accident, you can still claim on the other guys insurance.

No their insurance would not cover it as you are driving on third party cover. You or the cars owner would be responsible for any damage to the car being driven by you.

Just found that there are restrictions regarding age and experience but like you said it will be on my certificate, although quickly looking at it there is nothing which says I can (or can't) but it seems unlikely being 17

I'll find out for sure tomorrow when I phone them :) appreciate the replies

I asked directline this and at first they told me 21 so i patiently waited til i was 21, called them up again and they said 25!!!
Irritating!
Does anyone know of a insurance company that will offer this at 22? I desperately need cover to drive other insured vehicles with permission as I can't be added as a named driver to any of my families car's and as my mini is coming off the road soon I have no car :(

From the looks of your policy its seems like it might be ok, but probably limited cover eg only of you hit someone! But definately call your insurance company to know for sure as has been said already. They will tell you exactly what it covers and that way you will know for sure rather than risk it!!

It means you will be covered for third party only. If you have a prang which is your fault then the car you are driving will not be repaired/replaced. Also if the car is vandalised, broken into or stolen when in your possession it will not be covered.
Also you can not go and pick up someone car that has been impounded because they have no insurance (point e).

i think nearly all insurers state 25 and depending on your convictions.

its because too many 17 yr olds were driving there dads subarus etc using this method. so now theres an age limit and it can be restricted if your a bad driver.
