Try your radius arm pin to see if that has worn through the bearings. And yes it could be the cone or even a broken knuckle on the trumpet.

Surely that would throw my tracking out though? and be causing some noise?

The worn radius pin and bearing will make the car feel unstable at the back and wont make any noise. The wear on the radius arm on my wife's car was quite extreme and had worn through the bearing and into the arm itself. It did look low on that side as well and the handling was awful.

Do check the trumpet and the cone to make sure that is not broken or the cone badly compressed from wear and tear.
