I've had a problem with my Mini ever since I have bought it and the problem has just become serious. I've never been able to get the hazards to work and I've been trying for months by buying different switches and a new flasher unit, none of this has helped except I was able to get the lights on the left of the car to flash with one of the switches. After trying to get it to work properly this morning I can no longer get my indicators to work properly, either they just light up the lights, not flashing, or they do nothing at all, depending on which position the hazard warning switch is in.

Can anyone help please by telling me what colours all the wires are to do with hazards and indicators and where they go to and from? The Haynes manual isn't very clear.

The car is a 1991 Mini Neon.

i cannot help you with wire colours but I found when I had problems with my hazards that you need a hazard flasher unit that works with the indicator flasher unit you have, they don't all work together. However, it could be that its just your indicator flasher is screwed. It is located behind the lower dash rail to the right of the steering column.

I'm not too hot on the change point. Do you know if it has 2 flasher units (each with 2 terminals) or a single electronic one with 3 connections?

I have two flasher units, one in the engine bay on the passenger side, and one by the steering column, I've tried replacing both and have had no luck.

The one by the steering column is for the indicators. Is it correctly rated 2 x 21W + 5W, and are you using standard bulbs? Have you got a multimeter, circuit tester of some description?

Yes I have, but I've just got the indicators working again by putting in a hazard switch which does nothing, so I'm back to the original problem of no hazards.

I should add that when you press the hazard switch then the indicators don't work, so I guess that is a normal function since the hazards should kick in? But it just does nothing, not even light up.

Yes that's normal.

The bottom 2 connections (light green/brown) on the hazard switch are for the indicators - so they are turned off when the hazards are on. The other 4 pins should all be connected together then but all isolated when it's off.

So if it is the switch? That means I have three broken? I've bought two already thinking it was the switch.

Or there's a wiring fault.

Hazard Switch Wiring...

Light green/brown x 2 - 1 from indicator flasher (live with ignition on), the 2nd to the column stalk.

3. Light green/pink - from the hazard flasher (permanent live, but "flashy" of course).

4. Green/white - right indicators

5. Green/red - left indicators

6. Green/light green - the bulb in the hazard switch (via one of the little spades on the side)

Tests...

Check 1 & 3 are live (ignition on), best to remove the flashers and replace them with a bit of wire - they are effected by current flow.

Test continuity between 2 & 4, 2 & 5 when the column stalk is in the corresponding position.

Test the switch continuity, as above, bottom 2 connect (off), all the others connect (on).

Hi, just an update, I got my father to look this morning and we found a sneaky blown fuse behind the air filter, and we think we got them working briefly but the flasher unit died in the process so I have ordered a new one, we're pretty certain they'll work when the new flasher unit arrives, unless it dies again. Thanks for the help.

Replace it with a paper clip. You should get hazards that do all but flash. If your indicators work, they ought to also work if you replaced that flasher with the hazard one. It doesn't work the other way round & a hazard flasher usually fails in the off position, whereas a failed indicator flasher usually leaves you with non flashing indicators.
