Hi all, has anyone else experienced a chirping noise under the bonnet? I was driving to work the other day and noticed the gearbox whine had increased a bit, but nothing too odd.... then on the way home there was a chirping noise, coming from I think the transmission side of the engine..... it didn't change in pitch or speed with acceleration or gear change, and stopped when in neutral or with the clutch depressed.....

I had an idler gear bearing go on my last mini big style, but can't remember it sounding like this.... any ideas?

cheers

I might be wrong, (in other words, wait until someone else corrects me), but the only chirping sounds I've every heard from under the bonnet were the fan belt going.. Happened a bit until I worked out that I hadn't tightened all of the nuts on it & it kept pulling loose...

Minis have a strange way to move sounds around the car, so I'd be checking everything under there that could possibly make sound..

Funny you mention this; took Red for a test drive last week and had a chirping noise on acceleration a couple times out of the engine bay. Haven't heard it since. My belt is brand new too...odd.

I had a strange chirping noise coming from the front of my 91 cooper and after checking the usual things having ignored it for a couple of weeks, fan belt etc I decided it was coming from the n/s wheel. I checked the bearing for play and there wasn`t any but I pulled the drive flage off anyway and the pile of blue metal that was once my wheel bearing fell out. That`s probably not your problem but the moral of this story is get to the bottom of strange noises as a matter of safety.
