This has probably been covered but I can't find anything, I am ready to paint my mini which has a few patches of surface rust, am I right in thinking if I sand/grind the spots back to bare metal, paint on some krust with a brush, wait 3 hours (as it says on the krust packet) then prime, colour then lacquer everything will be good! Thanks

Yes and no.

Providing it is only light surface rust then yes it should work. If its pitted at all then you may have problems in which case you may have to carry out local repairs ie cutting the rust out and replacing with fresh metal

If you have access to a spot blaster then this will work well for both. The one thing you must remember with mini panels are that they are formed from thin metal so removing a lot will seriously weaken it.

If you sand the patches down as much as you can going through stages of sand paper. e.g 80, 180, 600 (wet and dry) 800 (wet and dry), this should help take it down.

But as above if it is pitted it will need to be shot blasted to get it out or cut the sections out that have pitted.

If pitted you could try using filler then smoothing it down the the same shape of the metal, but the rust will come back over time.

So the rust will come back through even if I put krust on first?

If it's only light pitting you could use POR15 Prep & Ready ( http://www.frost.co....eady-946ml.html ) I must admit I was sceptical about something that actually removes rust altogether, but was pleasantly surprised when I first bought this. It actually works, you just need to keep the area wet with it for a while (can take up to half an hour) and work it with a small stiff brush and it literally dissolves the rust away back to clean metal. Then just clean the area and I'd give it a coat of red oxide primer then ready for the proper paint.

No such thing as surface rust on a mini

Yes there is, unlikely I know but it does happened for instance under the seam strips where there is no factory paint, I personally blasted my inner wings on a previous mini I had which were covered in surface rust. One coat of zinc rich primer and a couple of coats with a rattle can, 10 years latter the passenger side is still perfect, the other drivers side is just starting to show signs of rust again
