Inertia To Pre/engaged Starter

hi me again. i have just fited a newer engine to my 1984 mini automatic (1991 engine) it has a pre/engaged starter. i have kept the wing mounted solenoid on as terminal. i took the lead from the old starter and conected it to the battery feed side of solenoid took the red and white wire of solenoid extended it to the new starter conected the main leads to the new starter. reconected battery, got ignitoin lights but starter would not turn not a sound. checked for live feed, got 12 volts to old solenoid and to starter. now i dont know what to do could i have blown ignition any help please

Did you put the starter wire red and white to the big spade

Also the new starter the energising wire to it is normally fed via a relay.

You could use your wing solenoid to do this.

Keep the wiring standard on the wing solenoid , but do keep the starter cable on the battery terminal like you have it.

The terminal on the wing solenoid that was the starter terminal run a wire from that to the large spade on the new starter (its the top one if I recall right)

It is a good idea to use the inertia solenoid as a relay for the pre engaged one. The pre engaged solenoid has more work to do in engaging the gear - it could be the cause of your problem if the original wiring can't supply enough current. Just run a wire from the starter post of the old solenoid to the spade on the new one. As Firefox says, there are 2 - one operates the solenoid and the other provides a ballasted ignition bypass feed.

i have now got the engine to turn over she coughs a bit but will not start got good spark at plugs good fuel flow still scrachimg head

Engine type , fuel type carb spi mpi give us a clue

engine 1991, 998 automatic fuel unleaded carb of a 1984 auto all i know its hs4 dont know what spi or mpi is at a guess spi is single pin injection

check all the simple stuff

ht leads are they on right be suprised how many get it wrong and takes a double take to realise its wrong

No 1 plug nearest radiator

On the dizzy cap No 1 lead is normally top right

plugs
4 - 3 - 2 - 1

dizzy
3 - 1
4 - 2

above is order on engine and dizzy

Well we have got the starter running this is a much more complicated problem, have you put your old carb on , did you alter anything have you set the choke right , is it the same size as you took out mpi is multi point ing and spi is single point
