So years ago after reading Mr Vizards tuning bible I spotted the 48IDA, and in one of my mad moments bought and fitted one to my 1380 engine. The results were spectacular, as in floor the throttle and hold on for dear life as it went like a rocket, but the torque steer was immense, as in it was hard to keep it in the straight line on full throttle, (did make you grin though). The engine had far more low down torque, and yes it sounded great when you blipped the throttle.
The down side was a huge bulge on the bonnet to fit it under, fuel consumption on full throttle, well you could almost watch the needle moving, and being daft it did about 15 to the gallon, and I couldn't find anyone local with a rolling road that could set it up right low down, the firm I tried were suppose to be Weber specialists and just weren't is the best way to put it, and to run smoothly you needed to start the car ten minutes before leaving home for work so the engine could warm up and it worked fine.
All said and done it put the biggest smile on your face when you floored it, but at the end of the day travelling to work it just got to expensive in fuel, so swapped for a HIF44 which is not as much fun, but still does ok, and still have the weber in the loft just in case.
Prior to getting a new engine however I fitted a 32/34dmtl which I bought as a weber kit for the mini and was really please with that. I was more fuel efficient than the 1.5su it replaced but at the same time gave the car a bit more power, or at least it felt like it did. However it's not one of the more used carbs, but I was really pleased with it.
