Make, Model, Year?

Have you taken a look at:

- the throttle cable, it could be overly worn (will be jaggy underfoot)
- butterfly, something could be wedged in there such as a bolt
- the side of the carb, maybe the springs have disintegrated

I have no idea as to why the cable would jam open with the air filter on. The above suggestions may help :S

The air filter is shaped to fit around the throttle cable. Make sure that this cutout is positioned so that it does not interfere with the cable.

The filter does not usually cause a problem so this would suggest that ther is something wrong with the cable itself or it is not fitted properly. Check that there is no damage or kinks in the cable and that it is free to move. Replace if necessary.

Make sure that the return spring is in place between the throttle and the bracket underneath and that this is working properly.

I have a related issue...

The notch in the stock air filter prevents the cable throttle from being bent too much and binding. Also the bracket that holds the end of the cable sheath is angled to fit that notch. But on my car, the angle of the bracket causes the cable wire to exit the sheath at such an angle that the pedal feels rough. Straightening the bracket (and cable angle) made the pedal smooth, but then the air filter bends the cable sheath to much.

Any ideas how to fix this?
