the 998 finally gave up yesterday and I have been given a 1300 Allegro engine that i was planning on putting in the mini.

Am I right in thinking the 1300 is the same as a Mini engine?

if not what sort of modifications would be needed to fit it?

Matt

its the same apart from the final drive ratios, depending on your road wheel size . you will be able to use final drive crownwheel and pinion out of your 998 engine if you need to

Thanks very much,

I have 175/50 13's on my mini so it should be ok then.

Allegro may have used 13" wheels, but with much taller tyres. You're looking at a 3.9 diff, it'll be a bit of a screamer in a Mini.

so am i right in saying that with its current gearing my mini is likely to be screaming at 60+mph???........ can i take the final crownwheel and opinion of my old 998 as that is a much newer 92 engine, where as the Allegro 1300 is out of an early 80's car

You'll need to change things like engine mounts, thermostat housing, radiator brackets and some other stuff. It's fairly simple to see what needs doing when you have both engines in front of you.

You shouldn't have any problems changing over the ring and pinion from your current engine into an Allegro box. It might actually be easier to just change the boxes providing the one on your 998 is in good nick.

So I could fit my 998 box onto the 1275 with little fuss? As I know it's a good one. Also can anyone point me in the right direction as to what engine mounts, radiator brackets I would need.

You need all the bits from the 998 engine - fitted to the 1275. And you need is to fabricate (easy) or buy a top rad mount, and use a '?' shaped top rad hose. Otherwise - straight swap for the engine.

Someone I knew had a 1300 Allegro lump in a Mini - fast as you like up to 60 but any faster and it sounded like it was going to kill itself. It's worth finding out whether the All Aggro engine is A+ or A-series. If it's A-series you will need to retain your primary & idler gears if fitting your Mini gearbox.

With the 3.9:1 FDR of the All-aggro in top gear you'll be at 5000 rpm at 70 mph. So 6000 rpm will give 84 mph in top. That's rally car gearing.

Thanks very much BMCECOSSE that has put my mind at rest.

so i'm going to have to change the gearing for definite, just have to decide whether to change over the crownwheel and pinion to the 1275 or swap it with the 998 gearbox. which is the most straightforward, in your opinion?

unfortunately I am not 100% sure what year allegro the 1275 is from, should find out tomorrow.

Swapping the gearbox would be the better option.

The biggest factor is the 998 primary gear is too small for the 1275, so you'll have to use the leggy's which won't match the Mini transfer gears if it's A series 'n the Min's are A+. If so, it'd be worth tracking down a 1275+ primary if you can do it cheaply - Otherwise swap the final drives over.

Likely you'll also need to match up the clutch and starter. Similarly, it's all of one or the other, with the Mini's being preferable.
