Are the clutch bell housing interchangeable?
I have removed my old engine (old style clutch) and putting in a newer engine with a verto clutch.
(but on close inspection the housing has cracked) can I use the old style housing on the newer engine without having to change too much?

Depends on the bearing arrangements for the drop gears. How did the casing get cracked?

Haven't a clue, I think it was me at some point, by the starter housing.
Is there anything obviously different with the drop gear set up between the 2 types that I should know about?

Just compare the sizes carefully - I think it will be ok.

Are you sure it's a crack & not just from where the moulds for the casting joined? You can tell an A+ transfer case from an older one by 3 bolt holes, where a Metro engine mounting fits, on the A+.

Just checked it, Defo the casting. Thanks. I thought it was cracked, too much sun yesterday. Another question. Should the center bolt be loose? I've just tried to move the clutch arm, and the center bearing seems to rattle. Is this normal? I gather I just need a verto slave then?
just want to get all the little bits on so I can drop the engine in later.

The Verto clutch has a different slave cylinder & mounting, a much shorter arm and a different clutch release bearing. The adjustment stop-bolt is removed as the Verto is self-adjusting and the redundant hole is used to mount the Verto slave cylinder mounting plate.
