i went to halfords and bought a 33mm metric impact socket to put on my breaker bar, there is a specific imperial size but imm not sure what it is but the socket i got works fine.

you will need an extra person to pump and hold the brakes to undo the nut, putting into reverse helps aswell, just incase u didnt know.

There is NO equivalent socket size in mm. You will ultimately end up trashing your socket, the nut/bolt and putting yourself at risk as the socket is not a perfect fit. Spend the few quid more and get the correct sized socket.

Still trying to do this using the brake?

Take the wheel off, remove centre cap and hub nut split pin, put wheel back on and put car back on ground. Now put it in gear and loosen the nut, you'll find it much easier with the weight of the car and the tyre friction helping than with the brakes. Don't be foolish and try to do more than loosen it with the weight of the car on the wheel! It would be hard to do but if you managed to get the whole CV out with the car on it's wheels it'll fall on you. You can do it back up this way too, but do remember the split pin.

And yeah, it'll damage the nut pretty quickly using a 33mm socket at 150lbft and you could get hurt when it slips off.

Unless of course somebody has changed the nuts at some point, for the newer type ones that you can buy at all the shows.

They require a 34mm socket, and nothing else will fit.... Right PITA when you don't have one in your collection...

I think I use a metric socket, might be a 33mm, its a *very* tight fit, and usually needs a light tap of a hammer to get on. But it doesn't damage the nut or the socket. I have a socket set that has both metric and imperial (tis quite old now), I usually use the imperial, but will always try the metric equivlent, and if the metric is a tighter fit I'll use that. I can't see if the metric is a better fit how it will damage the bolt or socket.
