What do you mean by side panels? Are you referring to the sills? Apart from the door bottoms, they seem to be the only places where drainage is provided, and it is via the pressed flutes on the bottom. If these are blocked, it is because you have oversills fitted, which will rapidly ruin the car if not removed, as they will accelerate corrosion in the inner sill and even the heelboard ends.

Hi,

I am doing the body of my '94 Sprite and I found that somone had fitted oversills. Trust me - you want to get them off and quick. Usually they are fitted to hide rust thats already there and then slapped over with a load of underseal to get through an MOT or because someone wants to sell the car on without doing the work properly. I only found out I had them because I had some rust in the front and rear arches and had to strip the underseal off. I found that they hadn't welded the rear end of the oversill. The other telltale signes were inside the car. There were unexepcted marks and paint with some kind of sealant in one or two patches. Plus I had a rust hole on the inside that didnt have any kind of correspopnding rust on the outside - it just made me suspicious.

I'm afraid the only way you are going to know is get the underseal off and have a good poke around.

Just grind away the old welds - its a slow jb but it lets you do it without too much damage to whats underneath - just in case its not too bad.

What kind of cost would it be to have them taken off? And then what to sort rust if there is any ?

Not the answer you are wanting to hear but how long is a piece of string??

If and its a big if the old sill was removed then the rust damage may be minimal like on my Clubman, however if the old sill is still in place then you may need to replace the complete inner sill, the jacking point , both inner slinging brackets and possibly repairs to the heel board end.

This will not be cheap and i would hazard a guess at somewhere around the £600 mark. It maybe more it maybe less. Obviously if you can weld then its your time plus parts.
