I'm not sure for an MOT but you're supposed to have them to stop stones and dirt getting into the disc?

Alot of people don't bother with the brake shield, mainly because they break, and then rattle against the disk.

A positive is that without them, you might get a bit more air flowing over/at the disk.

A slight negative can be that water can more easily get splashed against the disk, which unless your brakes are getting super hot, I doubt would make much difference.

I've not had any problems with mine after removing them last year when I renewed the brakes.

Chuck em. They rust in no time and rattle on the disks and don't aid cooling at all. Can trap stones between themselves and the disc faces making horrible scraping/grinding noises.

Quick once over with the grinder and they are gone :D

I have always taken them off and chucked them in the bin. They don't serve any useful purpose except to act as a trap for rust and stones. They certainly don't affect the braking efficiency, which is all the MoT requires.
In fact, they are just an unnecessary nuisance.

The only possible advantage I can think to them is in really wet weather not as much water will spray onto the disk. May help on a motorway when you drive for a while without braking.

To be honest I've never had any issue with the brakes in the wet without those shields. It really doesn't make any difference at all so far as I can tell.

We had to fit the shields to get Mini through Gp 2 Scrutineering - where they helpfully suggested that the shields can be bent away from the disc - to make a very useful cold air scoop.......
