Where is it then????????

I have stripped three minis and never seen a vin except for the one
in the engine compartment.
I have been on an mot web site and they only list one on the 'engine
compartment drain channel'

Just double checking Pikey7, someone told me there was
another vin no elsewhere on the shell, just seeing if
anyone knows better. :D

sigh.

I have 2 minis and i can't ruddy find it on either. 'engine compartment drain channel'... thats the scuttle pannel below the windscreen isnt it? Bought a mini wednesday from a hbc salvage and can't find any numbers on it other than the vin plate on the front slam panel , and seing its got to go for an identity check at the vosa i'm fairly concerned.

Unfortunately it seems that the person who put the VIN there didn't realise it's one of the first panels to rust (and therefore be replaced).......

I assume you have actually scraped the paint out of the channel, as it's etched into the metal, and if that has been ground out, drilled or the section replaced... I suspect you are a vitim of a reshell... basically look for evidence of tampering rather than panel replacement.

That's because there was no such thing as a VIN before 1979 in Europe!

Before that there were commision numbers from the factory which were mounted all over the place depending on how old the car is. Mostly stamped into a tag welded to the bonnet slam panel but also can be found in other places such as under the drivers seat.

It's a commision number though, not a VIN so it won't start SAXX (or whatever it is for Rover), and won't fit the 17 digit VIN box on the V5 form.

The VIN if it has one is definitely stamped into the rain gutter of the engine bay. Directly in front of the driver (rhd) in the base of the gutter, you might have to peel out the bonnet seal to see it.
