Where is the best place to mount the internal bonnet release handle?

Where YOU want it. It is your car, after all. Just sit in the car and hold it in various places till one seems right.

On most modern cars it seems to be on the left of the passenger's footwell.

most modern european cars, which were designed for "left hand drive"
Later mpi mini's had them mounted on the lower dash rail, about 4" to the right of the steering column

Well, if that is where it feels right, that is where it should go. It is a perfectly reasonable place to put it. Logically, if you want to open the bonnet, you probably want to pull it as you are about to get out of the car, and that place is good from that point of view. But there may also be advantages in making it less obvious, or hiding it completely. Personal choice....

But I am not so sure that they are usually on the left because European cars are designed for left hand drive. My daily driver has it on the left, but apparently the European model has it on the right. I thought it was just to keep it out of the way when driving, so there is little risk of pulling it by accident.
