These terminals are the unreliable pot type, which spread and make poor contact with the battery. They are held on with a self tapper through the middle, but when the body of the terminal spreads (it is only made of lead), the self tapper ends up carrying all the current, which it does rather badly. I strongly advise cutting these off and fitting a pair of split clamp type, but please put insulating covers over them, so there is more than just the cardboard cover between the battery and whatever, such as a metal toolbox, you may be carrying in the boot. A shorted battery is very bad.
Your battery has not been drilled for the self tappers because that type of terminal, due to its unreliability, has been abandoned by car manufacturers many years ago.
The battery clamp has a J bolt at each end which hooks into the raised lug on the end of the battery box, You can see one in the photo.
The elastic strap also fixes to these lugs, in different holes, and holds down the cardboard cover, which is essential if you ever want to use the boot. If you don't have a cover, you really should get one.
Take very great care with the battery sitting that way round to ensure that the clamp can not come anywhere near to shorting the battery terminals.
