Hope I can get some help on here. Yesterday morning I went to my car to find I had left my lights on and low and behold the car wouldn't start. All the dashboard lights were coming on and the radio would come on but when I turned the key there was nothing. First thing I tried was to try to jump start the car with leads but that didn't work so today I have bought a new battery and fitted it but again there was nothing. All the lights and the radio still came on with the new battery as well so it seems it isn't the battery. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

When you say nothing, when you turn the key do the dash lights go off , go dim ??

Any clicking

what year is it ??

depending on year I'd say

bad earth , dodgy solenoid , dodgy starter relay (if fitted) , bad battery (yes new but can happen) , bad positive connection

Thanks for the reply. The dash lights are normal they are not dim and there is no clicking.

It is an 05 plate 1.6 mini one. Never had any problems starting before leaving lights on overnight so that has triggered something just don't know what

no clicking, i'd say it sounds like a relays gone, '05 - is the fuse box in the passengers footwell?

do you have an immobiliser?

Yes the fuse box is in the footwell, which is the relay? I believe it does have an immobiliser.

Have you got a spare key? you could try that see if that makes a difference with the immobiliser. do the easy things first.

if you've got a multimeter you can check there's power going to the solenoid on the starter motor when the ignition is on? I assume the new mini's have a solenoid? ha.

I'm not sure on which relay it is i'm afraid, dont supposed youve got a booklet or Haynes manual? or maybe google might help? or if someone else knows on here?

I just typed a huge reply out and then read this...

Just because Your dash lights are bright doesn't mean that your battery is holding its full charge. If you put your electric windows down does it take longer than normal for them to go up and down?

Personally my first port of call would be sticking a multimeter across the battery and seeing what it has. any less than 12v and that will be your problem, get a jump from a pal or push it down the road and bump it.

If you are still having problems after that then there are a lot of things you can do to find the problem but the above would be a good place to start.
