The notch at the back of the rotor arm is pointing at plug no 1.

Once when No 1 cylinder is on firing stroke, once when No 4 cylinder is on firing stroke.
turn the engine till the notch lines up again, you'll find the rotor points to No 1
the crank turns twice for every turn of the dizzy rotor

7 and 8 rockers will be opening and closing 1 and 2 will be slack this is TDC firing stroke, and then see where rotor is pointing
if it is pointing at no 4 remove the dizzy take out the dizzy drive with a long 5/16 bolt, the segment are differnt sizes, put the dizzy to roughly 1 o clock
and try the drive to orientate it turn the drive to about 3 oclock and put it back in it will turn anti clocwise a little when it slides down
then fit the dizzy hope this helps bud

I assume if I get it wrong the engine will tell me in no uncertain terms? :S I mean I can't drive it around like that can I.

Yeah if its pointing at no 4 on the firing stroke, take no 4 to plug 1 rad end then go anticlockwise 3/4/2

So in this instance I'm sticking with looking at TDC in the wrong position :)
Although in fairness it may always have been in the wrong position and he never noticed, so checking like mentioned with the rockers won't hurt and you'll know for definite which lead should be No 1

Normally I'd agree , but in this instance he said it was running, he removed dizzy when swapping to electronic ignition, he's obviously a noob so doubt he'd be aware how remove the dizzy drive without asking...or even how to put it back.
