Help! Took my dizzy out and putting it back inn again and the rotor arm is pointing towards cyl 4 not 1. Car is at tdc looking at the pulley. Am I being stupid?

The notch at the back of the rotor arm is pointing at plug no 1.

I'll add that the car was running ok yesterday, I've just been changing to electronic ignition and the dizzy cap cracked the first time because the rotor arm supplied was too big...

how much of the dizzy did you remove? did you take out the worm drive that connects to the camshaft or was it just the cap? or??? it is possible to put it back 180 degrees out

a 4 stroke engine the TDC mark will line up twice

Once when No 1 cylinder is on firing stroke, once when No 4 cylinder is on firing stroke.

turn the engine till the notch lines up again, you'll find the rotor points to No 1

the crank turns twice for every turn of the dizzy rotor

I took the entire unit out and as far as I'm concerned I'm putting it back in how it was. I'm just panicking because I noticed the arm was pointing to 4!

But if it's true what you say I'm ok just to start it up again?

take plugs out put your thumb over no 1 plug hole, and turn the engine / crank untill you feel prussure this will bring the piston to TDC

7 and 8 rockers will be opening and closing 1 and 2 will be slack this is TDC firing stroke, and then see where rotor is pointing

if it is pointing at no 4 remove the dizzy take out the dizzy drive with a long 5/16 bolt, the segment are differnt sizes, put the dizzy to roughly 1 o clock

and try the drive to orientate it turn the drive to about 3 oclock and put it back in it will turn anti clocwise a little when it slides down

then fit the dizzy hope this helps bud

Thanks a lot :)

I assume if I get it wrong the engine will tell me in no uncertain terms? :S I mean I can't drive it around like that can I.

Yeah if its pointing at no 4 on the firing stroke, take no 4 to plug 1 rad end then go anticlockwise 3/4/2

If all you removed was the dizzy and didn't pull a long shaft out of the block with a worm type gear on, and if it was running...Then it'll be fine, you've just got confused with where TDC is :)

Normally I'd agree , but in this instance he said it was running, he removed dizzy when swapping to electronic ignition, he's obviously a noob so doubt he'd be aware how remove the dizzy drive without asking...or even how to put it back.
So in this instance I'm sticking with looking at TDC in the wrong position :)

Although in fairness it may always have been in the wrong position and he never noticed, so checking like mentioned with the rockers won't hurt and you'll know for definite which lead should be No 1

Car is now making a squeaking/groaning noise when under load and it gets worse with lights on! Fan belt?

Lucky was doing that and upgrading the bypass hose on Monday

fanbelt or maybe alternator ...the more you ask of an alternator the more load it puts on the engine, hence the noise with lights on
