Hi all!
Installed a duplex timing chain today, the old chain had enough slack to drive a truck thru! when all was done, started it up- it sounded a little too advanced, I retarded the timing with the distributer, got it to 10' at idle.- went for a ride- runs fine BUT sounds like a chavs honda with the coffee can exhaust!! The temp is fine, and it is running better than before. The noise seems to be coming from the engine compartment as opposed to the exhaust, (rc40), and when decelerating from around 80 there was a slight popping.
Some of the strange stuff-
When I went to replace the timing chain I noticed that at #1 tdc the marks on the timing gears were 180 out! I put the new one on as i took the old one off- even though it looked odd. It wouldnt run with the timing 180 out... would it...
i have also been told that if the timing is off a tooth, it wouldnt run either- thats why I thought I may have done a good job putting it in, but I would never think it would sound so much diff! I drove by and asked my wife to take a listen- i said well... what do you hear? It sounds like a mini! she replied... what did it sound like before??? not a mini.... :ermm:
Thanks for your thoughts!!
Ryan

You did replace the front plate bolts with Csunk ones didn't you? If you didn't that would make an awful noise and kill the timing chain pretty quickly.

Glad to see the word Chav spreading through the english speaking world!

Yes I do have a K&N type filter, and I also countersunk the bolts... The air filter has been on there for quite a while- The loud noise is happening most around 4000 rpm and +. If I had to guess it sounds like some of the power stroke is coming out thru the intake manifold... This morning when the engine was cold it was backfiring thru the intake, when it warmed up it cleared up. I might try advancing the timing a little. If i messed up the timing with the chain, would it run at all??

PS: Since the word "Chav" has not made it completely around the US yet, its a lot of fun to pull up to a POS and say, "Nice Chav ride man! I bet its real fast like a 2cv, Right!!" They have no friggen idea and just say "yeah man! Itz juz like one ov demz 2cvs!"

You don't have some exotic wasted spark static ignition system do you? That would work with the cam 180 degrees out.

As the cam rotates at half the speed of the crank the timing marks on the gears will only line up every two rotations. So the fact that the marks were 180deg out meand that TDC was on an exhaust stroke at the time.

It would have been better to have rotated the cam back round to line up the dots as that way you know it was timed in properly (well the dots lined up dosen't mean that the cam is timed in properly as timing gears vary in tollerance).

I assume that you did this with the engine in the car, this is always tricky to line up the dots as you are looking from an angle. And as you tried to put the cam gear on 180deg out, it makes it even harder; your cam timing is probably out. Even out by one tooth woul cause the car to run rough.

Best bet is to take it apart and put it back together properly lining up the dots as per the Haynes manual. Don't worry if its 180 deg out when you take it apart, it makes no differance to putting it back together following the instructions.

P.S. Cam timing and ignition timing are seperate things, but the fact you had to change the ignition (diizzy) timing would indicate that the cam timing has not been put back the same.

I think Will could be correct there, I once made that mistake when building up a 1275, I had to adjust the dizzy so much to get it to run correctly that the ignition module was close to fouling on the starter motor....

And its funny, your Chav's speak in the same accent as ours!! :ermm:

How's this definition of Chav?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav

Seems a bit of a broad one from where I sit...but then again it hasn't made it over to this side of the pond. Do explain in more detail and I'll start using it with my mates and the lads at work....

Cheers,

Monte
