How the blooming hell am i supposed to get my head and a grinder and a welder uner there???? it is accessible from inside but only very tight access and again any ideas. it needs a plate for the MOT of doom that is coming up and i have been struggling to access it .
any help would be gratefully received

another little bit of advice take the shock mount off. (be warned though you might not like what you find underneath)

The way I would do it would be...
Take the shock mount off; draw round it marking the bolt holes on the metal that's going to be used for the repair,
Leave a fair amount round the sides to cover up the rust,
Hammerite the back off the new panel and area to be covered to prevent any feather rusting,
bolt the shock mount back with the new panel to the car and weld.
Doing it this way would also strengthen the area, and mean the panel would be held in place by the shock mount
making welding a little easier.

I don't think so. Anything that close to a suspension mounting has to be a full and proper repair. I don't know for sure whether plating over rot is allowed in that situation but I don't think it is, it may well need to be completely cut out. Any repair that is done definitely needs to be fully seam welded. I believe repair panels are available for that area. Oh and to do it properly probably means removing the wing.

i have decided to remove the engine as i am metro turboing anyway so need to do the bulkhead work first. this way i can do the welding from the back of the problem area which i have already checked is accessible.
