Hi there guys,

My MPi has recently had a body only restoration, the battery had been out for months and the whole interior stripped. It was finished yesterday, and we started it up for the first time and noticed the SRS light flashing. The engine runs fine, I am just a bit worried about it! Can anyone help? What does it mean?

Thanks! :(

Srs is your airbag light, have you changed steering wheels? You will need to get it on a code reader to diagnose the problem.

Nothing has changed, every component is the same. What code readers will read an MPi?

This should have been asked in the technical section. But then the mods can do something usefull now.
If all was well before, The most common issue is a bad connection some where.
What was removed from the car during the strip down?
Steering column? Seats belts?

Did you switch on the ignition with any part of the airbag/seat belt pre-tensioner system unplugged?.....most cars register a SRS fault if switched on with anything disconnected or faulty until re-set with a suitable code reader.

Switching the ignition off and on again will clear that, the system self tests every time the ignition is switched on

Check the connection at the steering column stalks and on the SRS ECU under the rear seat )drivers side(

I'm no expect on the later classic Mini's srs system.....but on the New MINI the srs system also self tests every time the ignition is switched on but once a fault has been registered it can only be cleared with a suitable code reader to cancel the dash warning light.

Does anyone know what sort of code reader is required? And where is the port to read these codes?

My money would be the garage that re-assembled your car didn't plug in a part of the SRS system, it shouldnt be too hard to find the components and check the connections, the system will be wired with bright yellow wires so easy to trace them around, and locations were mentioned above. :)

None of the modern universal readers unfortunately. You need a Sykes-Pickavant acr4, universal harness 30212400 and Rover v4 pod. These appear from time to time on eBay and can be quite expensive. You have to be careful not to confuse Rover MPi with Mini MPi and only v4 pod reads airbags.
Connection point is inside under the dash. Some Mini specialists will have the equipment including some who post here.
I have the kit in London.

Unless it is a later MPI, the SRS looms were switched to black but most of them are yellow :)

Definitely check all the connections. I had the light on when my rotary coupling began to fail, but any of the other connections would cause it too. It's probably easier to spend an hour checking it yourself than tracking down someone to fault code read it. Interestingly, after the ignition on test, mine lit constantly rather then flashing.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery for 15mins before playing with the SRS.
