hey all, i just got bk onto the mini seen after a few yrs from stupidly selling my old one but now i bought a 79 mini clubman with a 998 A+ engine which has a Swift tune Sporty Cam fitted.
It is also fitted with a Maniflow straight thru exhaust system and a K&N air filter. i was wondering what kind of bhp would this be kicking out and what could i do to get more. i have the chance of getting a 1275ccengine but not sure if i get this what i should do either. Was thinking maybe stage one kit or more was told to think about boring it to 1380cc but is this as reliable? and also what other things would i have to change on the car for this e.g. brakes to try let u know what im after is a mini that is fast but not to fast but at the same time not going to give me problems its not an everyday car i have a budget of say £1000-1500 with the 998 engine and £1000 if i was to go for the 1275cc engine. cheers for any help lads not sure what to do ha sorry for long post to.

In a road Mini a 1275 will always be a lot brisker than a 998 and at much lower revs too.
There is no point in buying a 1275 and then boring it to 1380 as the machining is expensive due to the need to offset bore the block and it really won't give any more useable power than a well built 1275. Just to buy a 1275 and re-bore it to the next size up would cost a lot more than £1000.
A re-build of the 998 would work well if you do a thorough and well thought-out build.
With regard to brakes, the 8.4" discs work well.

cheers for the quick response so do u think a 1275 engine would be a good idea to go for? What other then a stage one kit could i do with my budget to help increase bhp or do u think i should stick with my 998 and do some mods on that if so what would u recommend on that
cheers

If it is better overall performance you want it would be a good idea to get the 1275 engine and fully re-build it before putting it in the car. At the same time you could do some improvements to the head and exhaust and maybe fit an MG Metro cam.
Check the gearbox thoroughly before putting a 1275 engine onto it as many old gearboxes fail when the higher torque of a newly built 1275 is put through them. A centre oil pick-up in the gearbox is also advised.
