Seals in the master cylinder? Or if u have a servo maybe a failure there, but u never mentioned one so I'm guessing not

It would help if you could better describe exactly what the problem is. Is it a) brakes do work but excessive travel on the pedal, b) pedal goes to the floor without operating brakes, or c) pedal feels normal but brakes are not effective?

As your car is a 77 model, it probably has drum brakes all round. Is that correct?

If you have not already done so, you should remove the brake drums and check for seized or leaking cylinders, and fluid on the brake shoes.

Before bleeding the system make sure that front and rear brakes are fully adjusted.

Good luck

It has discs on the front the pedal returns its when you press down for the first time you get nothing you have to pump the system

+1 i'd check here, you'll soon see if theres fluid leaking (and causing a loss in pressure) just pull the just cover back

master cylinder or leaking wheel cylinders is my guess, has the brake fluid level gone down?

Take the rear drums off and if there is loads of brake fluid inside or when you pump brske fluid leaks out the cylinders gone. happened to me a few weeks ago. easy and cheap job to fix.

No fluid leaking when you took the rear drum brakes off?
