Hi all my spi has all of a sudden decided to play up at idle it is puffing not purring and there's black smoke coming out the exhaust any ideas and seems to be eating fuel?

map sensor pipework most likely split...

temp sender may have gone bad...

black smoke would indicate running rich, the cause could be many things, but I would always start with the basics; is the car in good serviceable condition? are the tappets set to the correct clearance? is there a good strong spark at each plug?

Just had this exact same problem, turned out to be that the map sensor pipework had been taped up and wired the wrong way, it was touching the exhaust manifold and was melting. Sorted now :)
