Hi all,

I have a 1990 998 mayfair and when I bought it, I checked the number on the engine block against the hpi check and the matched.

However, I have what looks like the old style oil filter assembly rather than the cannister type.

Any ideas how or why this would be so?

Didn't they stop about 1992 ?? or do you mean 1988 ??

1973 to 1992 were spin-on filters on a removable filter head, although the design of the head changed at some stage. 1993 onwards, the filter went directly on to the engine block.

The old filter head for cartridge filter could be fitted to a later engine, but why would anyone want to? Unless, of course, the filter head was damaged and that is what they could find in a scrappy. Or, maybe they thought that the old style filters were cheaper.

One thing that can't be changed, is the engine block A series, without external ribs on the block, or A+, with the external ribbing?

Tiger, external ribs? I'll take a look, but i'm not sure what i'm looking for. Would you be able to let me know where to find them?

thats a weight off my mind. was worried that i might have someones frankenstein engine that they built in there kitchen and none of the parts i'd buy would be correct for the year etc.

1990, it is an A+, and I am glad you have solved the filter problem, with input from Irostoke. The ribs which I referred to can be seen on the front of the block, and run horizontally and vertically.
