My gear stick seems rather sloppy especially in the forward/backwards direction and i have narrowed it down to the ball at the bottom of the gearstick.

I have purchased the following to rebuild the selector:

Looking at the diagrams it should just be a case of knocking out the 2 roll pins and replacing the 'yoke'.

My question is can this be done with the selector on the car? Either by removing the base plate or through the gear stick 'hole'?

I would remove it from the car. Its held on by rubber bushes and those pins are fecking tight...But is it not more likely that changing the gearstick would solve your problem??

Ive replaced the gearstick already which reduced the problem (the ball on the old stick was in a right state) but theres still some slop.

I can't easily remove the entire housing from the car as the bolt for the steady bar is blocked in by my LCB.

Ill give it a go with the housing on the car (from inside the car with a jack under the housing to protect the bobbins). Ive got the proper punch for doing the engine end which i guess will be the same.

If not ill remove the whole thing.

You shouldn't have to fully remove the bolt, one side of the yoke is slotted. You could try detaching the steady rod at the selector end instead. I sleeved the rods through the selector casing with some copper tube to tighten mine up.

I finally managed to get round to doing this at the weekend. Checkout the wear on the old yoke...

After changing the yoke everything was nice and tight (yes i packed it all with grease before refitting the bottom plate). No play at all anywhere now makes the car feel nice :)

Hi guys...

I read this thread the other day and now I'm confused (it doesn't take much)...

I re-built my mechanism a while back and haven't put it back in the car yet.

I managed to break the yoke when I took it out and had to buy a new one...

BUT my gear stick doesn't have the white 'ball' on the end as shown above (see picture)...

It is a 1973 1275GT by the way...

Neither of the 'Mini' sites I regularly buy from show the ball in the diagrams although I have found it and the yoke on ebay (£18.95).

Do I need it...?

I couldn't figure out how to remove the ball from the stick it looks like it is glued on in some manor. I didn't use the ball as i fitted a new kad quickshift.

I guess its not supposed to be removed. The kad ball is white but the standard one as yours is is a dark grey :) Yours looks very worn though.

Thanks for that!

It makes sense now...

Yes, it is very worn - I guess 40 years of driving does that!

Perhaps a new Quickshift is in order... * rubs chin *
