Had a cracking day at the Brighton Speed trials and also got thoroughly cooked. I make a cooked lobster look pale, anyway some piccies and i have got a couple of poorish vids to try and upload as well.

There was some very mad single seaters one with two Hayabusa engines in it, brand spanking new Lambo Aventador, a very very quick R34 and a couple of new GTR's, GT40 plus numerous other motors. And some monstrously quick bikes.

I can recommend this day and for a £10 to wander through the pits is well worth it.

Yes they did and went well. I don't think any of them cracked a ton but they were quick. Plus they sounded really good. And you missed a really good day but very very busy.

It was monster and it was beautiful and went like a rocket. I needed to take more pictures but i was right by the start line and Marshalls box blocked the view, still there's always next year.

My son has just told me some very sad news. We left before the final runs and one of the sidecar combinations crashed and there was a fatality. Not good. Also the event was nearly cancelled due to a stabbing on Madeira drive the day before.

All very very sad.

Let's hope that a crash like that doesn't spell the end for the speed trials. Thoughts and prayers with the families affected by the crash.....

Mini designer Alec Issigonis driving his famous self built 'Lightweight Special' (No 52) at the 1946 Brighton Speed Trials
John Cooper and Alec Issigonis also became friends after competing against each other in the Brighton Speed Trials ...

The first complete car that Issigonis designed, rather than components for someone else's project was the Lightweight Special. He and a friend constructed it in his home garage using only hand tools. As John Bolster wrote in his book, "Specials", "The Lightweight Special is one of the most amazing specials ever constructed". The chassis was a monocoque made using aluminium/plywood sandwich panels. It was strong but lightweight. Th wishbone front suspension and swing axle rear suspension were unique to the car and had rubber springs. Ultra lightweight Electron wheels and hubs were another unique feature. A supercharged 750cc Austin Seven Ulster engine, was fitted at first and used in competitions with great success. This was replaced after the war with an experimental O.H.C engine made by one of the Nuffield companies (the owners of Morris). This engine is in the car today and the car is still used for hill-climb competitions.
