It runs and idles fine but when I press more firmly on the brake whilst driving the engine stalls, I heard it could be a vacuum pump, it had come off but I've put it back on but could it still be that? Is there anything else it could be?
Thanks in advance

I had this except issue last summer, was an absolute nightmare!

Thoroughly recheck all the vacuum pipes. In that i mean take them of one by one and check them and their elbows. There should be no cracks. They are pretty cheap to replace (couple of pounds), also consider changing the fuel vapour trap.

Make sure you refit the correct way around too, as each elbow is a slightly different size.

Well they all seem to be fine as far as I can tell, it only stalls when my foot is on the brake making me assume it's something to do with the brakes- but I'm no expert :P

I dont think it anything to do with the brakes per se, instead its a symptom of heavy breaking, in turn heavily slowing the car down. which is then somehow causing the car to stall.

I would try with replacing the fuel trap and the two vacuum pipes running to and from it. costs under a tenner for the lot

It could be related to the brakes if the brake servo is leaking. That would allow air in the intake manifold when the brake pedal is depressed.
If your servo is working properly, you can depress the brake pedal several times with the engine not running and feel that the pedal comes up some. This is when the vacuum in the servo reserve is depleted. Then, while depressing the brake pedal, start the engine and you should feel the pedal sinking a bit as the engine creates a vacuum in the servo.
If the servo is leaking, as you depress the brake pedal, both sides of the servo will see atmospheric pressure and the engine will be affected. Also the brake boosting function of the servo is not effective.
Here is an animation of the servo function:

Hope that helps,
Ivan
