The biggest problem is buy the time the oil light does come on, the oil pressure has already dropped to the point of doing damage. The light comes on around 8psi, but you need at least 20psi at tick over when warm...

That's true, but I had a Lotus Sunbeam track car and it used to suffer from oil surging on hard acceleration if the oil level was not topped up to a certain level (even with a baffled sump). I fitted a buzzer which drew my attention to the split second low oil pressure without me having to watch the oil gauge all the time. Worked a treat.

Minis can suffer from the same problem if run low on oil, with the oil pickup being nearer to the sump plug end of the sump/gearbox. Hence why a fitting central oil pickup pipe is a worth while mod for any fast road or track mini.

My diagnosis was right, the old pressure switch was dead. Changed it and wired up the light + buzzer.

Here it is:

Depending on how much you want to spend I use this make of gauge as it can have different pressure values to set off alarms and or change dial colour.

They're SHINEY! If I ever built another car with a custom dash, I'd buy a whole set!

But I have an oil pressure gauge!

Let's not get off topic, I simply wanted advice on the safety of wiring in a buzzer on top of the existing warning light. And it worked, so problem solved!
