Greetings,

The engine rebuild is progressing slowly but steadily and I have just put the gasket on the front plate and bolted it onto the block.

I have been given a small (about 50mm across) thin (about 3mm or so) rubber O ring but cannot for the life of me work out where the hell it goes.

I'm doing the oil pump at the same time so I thought it might be missing from that end, but extensive research here and in Haynes manuals and the like revealed no such part in the camshaft end or the oil pump end.

Any thoughts please?

Block to gearbox oil seal?

Edit

For where the oil goes up from the gearbox into the engine.

Sounds right. It goes on the gearbox side. If you havent put the gearbox on the engine yet your fine. If you have you need to remove the box and put the seal in. You may not get any oil pressure otherwise and you will need to strip the engine.

50mm would be too big for the block to gearbox seal

Any chance of a picture? The gearbox O ring is the only one I can think of, and yes - it's much less than 50mm and more than 3 mm !

Isn't there an O ring on the gearchange selector pivot pin, the flat head of which is visible on the bottom of the gearbox, towards the clutch end, and another on the detent sleeve? If you have not stripped the gearbox, you will not have had these out, and will not need the O ring. I can't recall ever seeing a leak there.

There is also an O ring on the aluminium bush used to steady the gearchange rod to prevent seal leakage. We do of course know of lots of leaks in that area!

The Verto clutch operating plunger sometimes uses an O ring as a retainer. Also some distributors use an O ring seal on the body, where it goes into the adaptor in the block, and the adaptor itself must use a larger O ring.

Having mentioned all the places I can think of where an O ring might go, I must say that, having got through maybe a dozen gasket sets over the years, I never succeeded in finding a home for some of the items in each. There always seemed to be extra bits, some of which I know were for use in other applications of the A series engine, e.g. Morris Minor, Midget etc. There was also overlap between the gearbox and "conversion" gasket sets.

Thanks for all the fast responses. Contacted the guys who gave it to me as part of the seals kit and it's for the distributor drive shaft. Where the shaft sits in its keeper block which then sits in the engine block, there needs to be an oil seal.

Ta-Daaa!

Onto scraping the old crap out of the engine bay prior to rust-eater coating!

I completely forgot about that O ring. Ive never had a gasket set that included one. It seems obvious now.

Good Luck
