I've got a 1976 998cc Mini, and the manifold is only a 3-2-1, when the engine's 4-cylinder? Can I change it to a 4-2-1 or is it specific to the car?

Yes - indeed you can! You just need an alloy 8 port head and a new camshaft - and 4 carbs (or twin 40 DCOE Webers) - total cost in the region of £3000+, - and not normally done on a 998, but nothing is impossible.......

Ah,

The problem here is you have a 5 port head (2 in, 3 out), 3-2-1 means 3 exhaust branched into 2 into 1. You cannot have a 4 anything unless you buy a 8 port head (4 in, 4out).

So, to answer your question. No, unless you buy a new head.

Thank you for such a quick response! Think I'll give that one a miss then :) What would you suggest to get a little more power out :)?

(aimed at bmcecosse) obviously he doesnt know much about minis, so why would you put that?? not exactly helpful is it...

no you cant, the mini cylinder head has 3 exhaust ports. two on the outside and one in the middle for numbers 2 and 3 cylinders. the best exhaust is an LCB manifold:)

for more power i would advise a stage 1 tuning kit. available from the likes of mini spares. but you will have to get the car set up on a rolling road after:)

Well, lets start bare braces. What do you have currently bolted onto your car? We know nothing of it.

But, a Stage 1 kit (new exhaust, air filter, inlet, lets the engine breather better) is the normal and cheapest starting point (which much eBay-fu I built a stage 1 for about £30).

Thank you for those as well :) I was thinking stage one kit.. Not sure about braces etc, you're right about me not knowing a lot! Only about what might go where! I'll look into all of what you've told me and try and get back to you :)
