that looks good to me, learnt a bit of tig not so long ago, very easy to get a pretty weld but it can be a ******* to get a good strong weld! that looks pretty good though!

Looks good. Especially if that's your first time. A few mistakes... but something time will fix.

What you planning on TIG'in? Or just fancy learning/having a go at it?

The weld looks very good, as far as it goes, and if just for welding practice, is one you should feel quite pleased about. If it was on thinner plate it would be very nearly perfect. However, on such a thick piece of metal, you would need a much larger fillet for full strength. That is no criticism of your TIG technique, just that what you are welding is very thick. You would fairly easily build up a bigger fillet by putting two or three runs down, side by side, on top of what you have done. You would need to weld the reverse side too, of course. Of course, not everything needs the full strength that the material thickness is capable of.

I will be very interested to see what you are doing with the Polo gearboxes. Looking forward to your next pics. I do like to see nice welds, and TIG is the nicest looking of them all.

The tig is a beautiful weld once perfected.
The pic in the original post is lovely, theres something very satisfying with a nice smooth weld. Looks great mate.

As long as the penetration is sufficient, the only knack is perfecting even pools and a nice straight line.

Practice makes perfect, i think the tig is under used.... although its not the most practical in those tight, hard to reach areas.

Edit* and spotlessly clean fresh metal to weld to.... :-)

I like the look of those! There is something about TIG and ali, the welds just look right somehow. You don't get that with any other process. MIG leaves a lot of spatter.
