Budget? Aims, sound wise...sound quality, or sound quantity?

Budget... What ever it costs to be honest, Going for a unique build.

I would say I'll push towards something like 2 10" subs with 12" for death or maybe a 15" something like that.

sound quality, or sound quantity = Both.

Wouldn't mind something to show off with, but something thats going to sounds great not chavy!

I won't have any back windows, as I am turning it into a Van... But would like something good to look at when you open the rear doors ;D

Ok...loud and clear is a good call ;D

Personally, I'd look at a pair of ported 12"s in a box in the back seats (15"s are doable, but it would take some clever box building and maybe some hacking of panels)

You could do a fibreglass top panel if you wanted to make it look a bit different (HERE is a pic of a build from a guy in the US...just as an idea)

Then you'd want a front end to match...you're a little limited on space in a Mini so it might be easiest to just stick with some 6.5" components (kick builds perhaps, then tweets wherever sounds best to you)

Then...you're going to want a decent battery in the boot (one good one should do: Optima, Northstar etc) or maybe 2 cheaper ones (Numax leisure batts, for example) Plus a fair chunk of sound deadening (Second Skin from CAD is getting some amazing reviews)

Purely IMO again, but I'd love to see some of the new RE range in a Mini...they should be arriving in this country in the next month or two. Amp wise...depends on the subs to be honest. Something in the region of 2kw RMS would be awesome. Front end...£200 or so on the comps, then maybe the same again on the amp. HU is up to you...if you want screens etc, then obviously you've gotta shell out

My build is going to be better than the chavy boxes thou.

I am going for a full on fibreglass enclosure. I am thinking of say a 15" sub facing out of the doors, so when you open the doors you will see a sub....

Then a flat on top, where I'll situate 2 amps, then behind the seats, I'll have 2 12" subs (or might go for 10's) one either side, behind each poassengers (if u know what I mean) and a row of 4 or 6 comonant speakers (6.5") down the middle, like a spine.

THen up front, 6.5" comps, in the doors, (going for custom doors cards, made from fibreglass) like u said, running off an amp.

Now I have looked at the GTO JBL range, look smart, but what do you think the clearity will be?

I have a 10" JBL sub, made in a custom enclosed box, and sounds great in the boot of my Fiesta, thats running off a SPL-X 450 amp, C**p, but good ;D So personally, I think the JBK subs are ok.

But like you said, loud and clear is how I want it :)

Mixing subs = bad. Sealed = bad (if you want to get loud, that is) And which install is chavvy?

If you want a budget install, then JBL stuff is good. If you want proper quality, then I'd look at spending more (you did say budget wasn't an issue)

Just a thought, have you considered what to do with the rest of the car? As in the bits that don't make a noise?

It's just that I had a pretty radical idea reading this topic. You said you wanted to be able to open the back doors so people could oggle at the speakers... maybe you could do something different with the doors themselves? For instance, instead of them opening on hinges on the corners, you could hinge them from further forward along the side of the car, giving you back door an almost gullwing opening look - that would open up the car a lot more, allow people to see more of what you've put in, and be even more unique! I've certainly never seen anything like this done, it may not even be possible... I've attached a pic of a little diagram I've just scribbled which will hopefully show you what I mean.

hell yeah,

as for jbl they do some good stuff and for the money you really can't complain, i'd edge towards power series or GTI stuff if you can, the build quality is amasing and they give a really good sound.

having said that if it were me i'd go JL audio all the way with a focal front end

To name brands/models we really need a rough budget though mate, subs can vary from £50 up to £500 same with amps and comps

well I like the sound of x2 15"'s but I did fancy 3 subs, but maybe 3 x12" might be better than 2x15? what do you guys say?

My budget is prob about £800-£1200, not sure, but work on £800 mark.

HUmm... as I write this I am thinking of a great idea.

2x 15" subs, facing into the car, sat bvehind the passangers heads, (almost) with the amp set up, in the back, so when I open the doors, I can show off, say two amps? But still wouldn't mind a small sub sat in there  just so something you can see working.

It will most prob be made into a ported enclosure, like I said, I am making a moulded jobbie, made out of fibreglass.... like a prob ICE build, the ones u see in such mags like maxpower etc...

Like I said, I am sorted for HU, so you don't need to inc that in my budget, same as cableing, as I work for a electrical warehouse, so cable is a easy to get :- Just mainly what subs, amps, and comps to go for.

Cheers

(by the way I am paneling the side/rear windows, and turbing it into a van, so it won't be all on show.)

Meh...most Max Power installs are all show no go. Stupid IMO. I heard a couple of "show" cars at Performance Vauxhall last year...I almost cried with pain

For £1200, you can't really go all out (I was hoping you were gonna say £5k after your "no budget" quote...shame )

RE 12.1 - £350
http://www.caraudiod...roducts_id=4322

2 x RE SE 15 - £240 x 2
http://www.caraudiod...roducts_id=2963

JBL 75.4 - £100
http://www.caraudiod...roducts_id=4140

JBL GT06506 - £65 x 2
http://www.caraudiod...roducts_id=4137

The rest on lots of wood, FG, deadening and a decent battery or 2 (as I said in another post)

I'm a basshead...so sue me. 2 x SE15s would beat the C**p out of your van, and really turn heads (if that's what you want)

And I bet you're gonna moan that the amps don't match, but it's bloody hard trying to get a.) power b.) quality c.) value AND d.) matching looks :-

well what about 4 12's or 10's in a diamond type config like this

imagine you are looking in through the back doors, you obviuosly can't see the backs of the subs thats just to show how they'd go.

Subs are a very personal taste and really thats what it sounds like your after, loads of bass. You could spend £800 and have 1 12" sub and some nice components or spend the same and have 8 subs and 4 sets of components.
Its really about what you want and whats gonna look nice. having loads of subs is gonna mean loads of weight and the car will either fall apart or do about 50 flat out.
Ive had loads of different systems ranging from 6 X 12" magnat subs and 6" focals up front to 2 x12" phase linear aliante limited subs, phase linear mid 51's and components up front using 2 x phase linear .2kw amps. The subs were £500 each as opposed to the magnat subs that were £50 each.

My personal favourites are 12" subs due to the overall sound of them. 10;s are a bit too poppy and dont handle low bass that well, whereas 15's do low bass extremely well but dont handle the pop that good. I hate 6x9's and so 15's and mids just seem to miss out too much frequency.
I used to have some JBL GTX 15's which are no longer available but were the best JBLS's you could buy and were truly awesome but took up a lot of space.
I currently run 2 x JBL GT4 10;s which do a very good job but dont sound as nice as 12's. the only reason I have them is that I couldnt fit 12's and reatain some usually boot space for my daily driver VW Bora.

Im currently restoring my mini phoenix which is the same as a van and im leaning towards a single 12" but stealth under the boot floor in the wheel well and some focals up front.

Not to start a riot as you have your head unit sorted but personally for a head unti you cant beat Alpine, ive had all other manufacturers but for sound quality and accuracy for me its gotta be alpine. Im not into falshy lights and dolphins on the screen though!

Just my two pence worth
Simon

Well the reason I have that head unit is I got it in a swap I done... so I can't really complain, I will be putting a 10 disk changer onto it too!

I am going for the route of 2x 15"'s... and have them facing out, so when you open the doors, two subs will be staring you in the face

What speakers shall I got for in the rear end? as bass has been sorted, what about getting some tunes going?
