Hi quick question,
I'm looking at a 98 JCW Cooper S. What are the main differences between the S and my standard MPi cooper? Is it worth going for?
Sorry if there's already a topic on this but couldn't find it.
Cheers

JCW Cooper S is not really the correct name so it depends exactly what you are looking at. I think JCW was invented for the new MINI. Before that it was John Cooper Garages.
John Cooper had been converting Rover Coopers to Cooper Ss since late 1990 but later on he started selling cars already converted. My Cooper S was converted in January 1991
The standard MPi is rated at 63 bhp.
The MPi models that John Cooper was offering in 1997 were:
Cooper S Touring rated at 85 bhp
Cooper S Sports 5 also rated at 85 bhp but with a 5 speed gearbox and sports pack wheels and arches
He later added the Cooper S Works which was rated at 90 bhp and had distinctive S works decals on the sides.
In 1997 the Cooper S conversion kit gave 85 bhp
The conversion included a large valve fully ported cylinder head, high performance exhaust and improved fuelling and induction. The ECU, which is not mappable, remained unchanged.
In 1999 the S works conversion gave 90 bhp and there was also a kit to upgrade the 1997 conversion. It had an improved intake and exhaust system. 90 bhp was considered to be an optimistic claim.
