Hello,
I'm ignorant here and need some advise. On the MK5 front number plate, are you just supposed to drill holes through the number plate and bolt through the two holes? Or is there a specific frame/bracket? For this car I'd prefer to use an adhesive method to mount the front one and avoid drilling holes if I can. But I have no idea what's proper or "typical". Nor where to get the mount (if there is one).

What's The Correct Front Number Plate Mount For A 1988?

probably just easier to stick it on rather then drill anymore holes, ive used doublesided sticky foam pads onto the two brackets under the bonnet

Is adhesive at the top on those two tabs enough to secure it? I don't want to loose my plate going down the road

Well, stick it on, then try wrenching it off after a few hours - we have to use screwdrivers to lever old plates off the trailer when we get a new van!

yep they stick on very well as stated above. i think i managed once to crack my number plate either by scraping it on a curb or hitting a low flying stone and it cracked the plate but the plate stayed on. But as with using sticky stuff make sure both areas are clear from any dust or debri push on to make a good contact leave for a short while and your sorted

when i did mine i bought some steel pressed plates for my 87 mini, because i didnt want to drill through the plates i had a steel plate cut the same size then i countersunk some screws and welded them into the holes. then i stuck my plate to the frame.
i used number plate tape from halfords. personally i wouldn't spare the tape you know then that its on well. also the plastic plates dont stick well if there on a curved panel as they have natural spring in them.

My concern was the surface area to stick to. On my MK5 there are just two tabs underneath the bumper, they have bolt holes in them to easily mount a plate with two 1" bolts and drilling holes through the plate. But there's maybe a whole 6 square inches to stick to going that route. If something brushes the plate at the bottom (even wind force) it could act as a lever and pull it off. It almost seems like there was "supposed" to be a bracket there, or else people just "normally" drilled through the plates and didn't care. I don't know because where I live we're not even required to HAVE front plates LOL. But I'm putting a new number plate back on to keep the look original.
I'm all for adhesive to preserve the look of the car and plate, just wish I had more to stick to.
I have some double sided foam tape that came with the plate, it's labeled "Autoprint". Is that any decent? It came with three, 3-3/4" strips.
