I tried the search function but couldn't answer my question so here goes. Please forgive me for being a newbe but I have a 1967 Austin Mini Cooper S with a manual trans and for some reason I can't get into reverse. I have removed the remote and cleaned all the trash out and noticed I was missing the Locating Pin as per the Haynes. I have since purchased a new pin but now I have two holes to choose from. I assume it's the one circled as the other one was plugged with grease. You can just about see the missing pin in the right hand side of the pic.

Two questions:
Is the locating pin what everybody is calling the roll pin?
Would the lack of this pin cause my issue with reverse?

No, that is not the roll pin, which is found on the rod change remote. Yours appears to be the old style (and much better) remote.

I believe the locating pin, if it is part numebr 2A3602, actually goes in the hole at the top right of your picture and engages with a groove in the ball to prevent the gear lever spinning. I would think that without it, you could have more problems than just reverse.

I suspect that the hole you have circled and its neighbour are an unofficial modification.

can you get the the gear stick through the reverse 'Gate' or does it crunch or just refuses to go in gear? has anything changed to cause the lack of reverse like new gear stick or did it suddenly happen?

Here's a pic - http://www.scparts.c...le_vertikal.tpl

Looks like the locating pin is laying by the side of the housing

I get a click when it passes the gate and then nothing. I reversed out of the garage and drove maybe 5 minutes and then tried to back into a parking stall. At that, no reverse. But I do have an after market shift lever that appears worn where the locating pin is suppose to hold it. Could this be the issue?

So you can get the lever into the reverse gate but cannot select the gear ?

If you can't get it into the reverse gate, then remove the plug on the front of the gearbox and the spring and detent, and try again.

Do you have any trouble selecting 2nd and 4th ?

If not then it's unlikely to be an issue with the selector but probably more the selector rod/detent in the box... I've know of a number of remote gearboxes where this has happened, especially those which have not been used for a while, and debris has collected in the selector rod mechanism and stops the plunger from moving thus stopping you getting into reverse.

No, the rods in the gearbox, there's three of them which the forks are connected to, the one which moves the reverse idler, the detent is in a blind hole and if debris gets in there, it can prevent reverse from being selected...

Unfortunately, unless you can resolve the issue from outside, moving the gearstick, changing the oil, flushing the sump etc then you're going to have to remove the engine and split the box off to diagnose further.

Hi all

Sorry to jump in on this one, but I have a similar problem. I also have a remote type gear box, fitted with a kad quick shift. I can engage all 4 gears but not reverse. Now I did strip down the rod selector section, I marked and removed and re-fitted part number 9 from this link http://www.scparts.c...le_vertikal.tpl, now if I did not get this back on the correct spline would that cause me this problem?

And if it would cause this problem which way would I rotate it (clock wise to counter) by a spline to sort the problem.

Many thanks

Kevin

You should adjust the rod in the direction in which it rotates to engage reverse. I can't definitely remember which way reverse is on these boxes, but if it is to the right and back, as I seem to recall, that would rotate the rod to the left (anticlockwise) so you would move the rod anticlockwise 1 spline, or move the knuckle clockwise one spline, if indeed that is the problem.
