Hello,

Basically, iv purchased a new shell to restore without a v5. The location of the v5 in unknown by myself or the previous 2 owners.

How would I got about trying to obtain the v5 for the shell. Assuming that this is at all possible. I've got the VIN number from the scuttle and roughly identified it as a 1974 - 1980 shell using the decoder on the love mini website. It also said it should have had an 849cc engine if I got the digits right.

How much of my VIN can I safely post on here without the booger man stealing my bank account details and kidnapping my beloved border collie named Rolo?

The shell is brown with 2 possibly gold stripes across the top of the rear quarter. I can only assume they went across the doors and front end but neither came with the shell.

Thank you very much in advance.

If you have also got the reg. number (number plate) then all you do is go and get a V5 aplication form from your post office....fill in info, send a cheque for required amount and bob's yer uncle.

If you havn't got the reg number, try contacting DVLA with your VIN number as i'm sure they can help you out.

yep he's right dvla are nothing but a waste of time it took me 4 months.to.get my.v5 from the dvla you need the reg or they won't give it you with out an inspection of the mini get a hpi check through the vin number and the reg will be on the hpi check then apply for the v5, the dvla will then right to the last known owner to see if they still have the vehical and they won't because you have it and when they don't get a reply for 3 weeks off the old owner they will issue you the v5 hope this helps

If you got the VIN from the scuttle, then it'll be from 1981 onwards, as the VIN system was only used on the mini from Feb 1981, prior to that it was a commission number and chassis number of which neither were stamped in the scuttle.

You can put the first 9 characters of the vin on here as that only identifies the type of vehicle, the serial number which follow should not be shown, you should be able to do a vehicle check on the vin number, which may provide the registration, unless the original (donor) has been shown as dismantled (scrapped) at which point you will not be able return the vehicle to the road without being checked ( BIVA or similar)

Thanks for the info guys.

I tried using an online VIN checker but it says it must be 17 digits long, but mines only 16 and that's if you count the * either side of the sequence.

What I have got is * X K 2 S 1 0 0 0 7 - - - - - *

Thanks again,

- Rich

If you take the to *'s off and add SAX onto the front then you'll have your 17, the SAX was added to the VIN in '81

But you're right, 850 mini, round nose saloon.
