after starting my car for the first time, it runs very lumpy, and theres a hissing sound coming from the carb. it will only run with the choke out and the revs vary. i cannot feel any air around the carb however i am aware that it could be drawing it in. has anyone any suggestions?

Could be the vac tube that has become disconnected at the carb end. Trace the vac tube from the dizzy back up toward the carb and see if it's actually connected.

Manifold air leak, or around the carb, check they are both seating correctly

just looked at the photo, on mine i had to bend the heatshield as it was riding on the exhaust pipe

just a heads up ;D

to check if there is any air leaks on the inlet manifold and carb area just spray something like wd40 or carb cleaner in this area, you should if you have a leak in this area hear a change in the speed of the engine.

Check for air leaks using carb cleaner, be very careful as the vapours can be ignited by the hot exhaust manifold.
If no air leaks, then its a sing of way too lean mixture.

Firefox, this is what i have been recommended and how I have done it in the past its an easy way to check for an air leak i was unaware of the fire risk especially if the car is still cold and only just been started. I would think twice about doing this on a hot engine.

This is quite a widely used method i always thought to diagnose the problem quickly.

However i must have just been lucky and i would obviously take the advice of someone who knows better. as the last thing i would want is to have you set fire to something or yourself.

Breather pipe isn't plugged or connected to the engine breathers.

This lets air in after the butterfly, leaning out the mixture, causing the problems you've got.
