to check if there is any air leaks on the inlet manifold and carb area just spray something like wd40 or carb cleaner in this area, you should if you have a leak in this area hear a change in the speed of the engine.
And dont forget to put on a firproof mask and keep your inhaler handy , see you in A&E

after starting my car for the first time, it runs very lumpy, and theres a hissing sound coming from the carb. it will only run with the choke out and the revs vary. i cannot feel any air around the carb however i am aware that it could be drawing it in. has anyone any suggestions?
Check for air leaks using carb cleaner, be very careful as the vapours can be ignited by the hot exhaust manifold.
If no air leaks, then its a sing of way too lean mixture.

This is quite a widely used method i always thought to diagnose the problem quickly.
However i must have just been lucky and i would obviously take the advice of someone who knows better. as the last thing i would want is to have you set fire to something or yourself.

This lets air in after the butterfly, leaning out the mixture, causing the problems you've got.

Firefox, this is what i have been recommended and how I have done it in the past its an easy way to check for an air leak i was unaware of the fire risk especially if the car is still cold and only just been started. I would think twice about doing this on a hot engine.

Yes apart from been a petrol head i was in the fire service for 13 years, just a kindly word of advice
