Good afternoon TMF,

Today we have launched our new range of sound installation products and I thought it would be good to let everyone know in more detail about our new range of subwoofer boxes.

We offer a range of sealed or ported subwoofer boxes for 8”, 10", 12” or 15" subwoofers, in a range of carpet coverings. We also offer bespoke bandpass subwoofer boxes.

Bandpass Subwoofer Boxes
A 4th order bandpass subwoofer box is for those of you who want be heard 5 streets away and listen to rap music - with a loud, slow beat.

Bandpass boxes are the loudest type of subwoofer box, but - it difficult to achieve high levels of performance as the enclosure volumes (both the sealed and ported chambers), port volume (of the ported chamber) and amplifier settings are critical. This is why we only sell bespoke bandpass subwoofer boxes, as it allows us to create a box specifically designed for your subwoofer.

When set up correctly bandpass boxes can produce extreme levels of volume - even if using modestly priced ICE equipment (subwoofers and amps).

Ported Subwoofer Boxes
A ported subwoofer box (also known as a vented enclosure) is for those of you who want to be heard 2 streets away and listen to dance and R&B music.

Ported boxes can be up to three times as loud as sealed boxes, but - it is more difficult to achieve good performance as the enclosure volume, port volume and amplifier settings can be critical. As a result, you may have to spend extra time experimenting with sound dampening wadding and amplifier settings to get the desired outcome.

When set up correctly the vent in the enclosure channels sound waves (created by the back of the subwoofer) into the listening environment, resulting in not only a louder sound, but also a deeper bass note.

However, ported boxes can also create "port noise" at times - a medium to loud noise created by the back air exiting through the port. In addition to this, sealed subwoofer boxes produce sharper, crisp bass notes.

To summarise, ported boxes give you a much louder sound and will generate better low bass notes, but - on the downside they are larger and the sound quality is not a crisp (in comparison with sealed boxes).

Sealed Subwoofer Boxes
A sealed subwoofer box (also known as a acoustic suspension enclosure) is for those of you who want a 'crisp' sound install and listen to rock, indie and jazz music.

Sealed boxes produce tighter bass notes with greater sound accuracy than ported boxes - because they do not allow the sound waves created by the back of the subwoofer to escape from the box. This means sealed boxes have excellent power handling capabilities, which makes it less risky to push the subwoofer to thump to the beat.

However, sealed boxes do not allow the subwoofer's motor to cool down. In addition to this, ported subwoofer boxes can be up to three times as loud (this is unless you have the money to drive a sealed box to it's peak performance, using extremely powerful amplifiers and subwoofers that can handle the power).

To summarise, sealed boxes give you a crisper, more precise sound, but - on the downside they are not loud (in comparison with ported boxes).
