Had just put the exhaust manifold onto the cylinder head and as I was tightening one of the threads stripped on the stud and now I can't get the nut further on or get it back off.

Unfortunately it's not one of the end ones so it is proper tucked under the manifold.

Any tips to getting it out without removing the head?

can you weld the nut to the thread to stop it turning on the thread?

Great idea but don't have the facility to do it, may have to get someone else to do that if there are no other options

can you get in there with a hacksaw blade? just cut the nut off just so you can get the manifold off. Wrap a cloth round one half so you don't cut your fingers.

or what about locktite? but i suspect that might not hold.

Can you get a flat screwdriver in-between the nut and the head or manifold put some pressure on it and try to turn it with a spanner

this will help it pick the thread up and aid removal

Can you get the nut off? If you can, and if you keep on turning it the threads will eventually be gone and a pair of grips on it and you'll just be able to pull it off.
Then remove the manifold and get a stud remover (not an 'Easi-out), the proper sort which drives from a ratchet handle, and clamp it on and unscrew the stud. You may find a strong pair of Mole Grips will do it.
When finally fitting the head consider using 1.25" long 5/16" hex. head screws instead of the studs as then if the head gasket goes at any time you will be able to remove the head without disturbing inlet or exhaust manifolds beyond just pushing them back about 1/4".
If you are anywhere near me I can lend you the correct extractor. I'm near Cambridge/Huntingdon.

Get another nut the same size and tighten it onto the stuck nut. Should be able to un-screw it from the head then.

Definately worth a try. Too dark now but will give it a go after work tomorrow

Cheers for the ideas guys, really didn't want to have to remove the head to get to it

Once the manifolds are off I'm sure a really strong pair of Mole Grips will get the stud out as you'll be able to clamp them on really tight and have space to pull on the grips.
Good luck with it.

Any other ideas?

Tried the screwdriver behind the nut but not moved a bit.

Can't put another nut on the end as there isn't enough thread and looks like what there is has stripped too.

The gap between the manifold and the nut is not deep enough for me to get a hacksaw blade into.

May have to admit that the head will have to come off so I can access it easier unless anyone else has any tips. Unfortunately don't have someone who could weld it on for me

You really shouldn't need to take the head off. Just keep on undoing the nut, or turning it in the direction of undo and eventually there will be nothing to keep the nut on the stud. AS you turn it, lever between nut and manifold with a decent screwdriver. If you do this realistically it has to come off eventually as there will be no thread to hold it on.

This is how ive always dealt with this problem! Put another nut on the thread and tighten it untill it hits the bolt thats stuck, then undo the bolt thats stuck and it'll twist the stud out rather then undo the nut.
