    One Carb Or Two?

It looks like i'm gonna have to admit defeat in my quest to sell the min. The only reason I wanted to sell it was because I am very keen on a high power mini, however, every cloud has a silver lining......

So, it looks like i'm gonna stick with my trusty island blue (as trusty as a classic mini can be) and get some serious performance out of that instead. After mulling it over, I think i'll stick with the A-series and opt for the forced induction route. Here is a short list of the spec:

Megajolt

Mirage manifold

T2 turbo

Fuel pressure regulator

Fuel return pipe welded onto fuel tank

X-pin diff

2 core radiator (or a cheapo Chinese alloy jobbie)

I've also got a few questions that i'd like some help with. They are

  • Which clutch (i've currently got a verto clutch)
  • What would be the best way to lower the compression ratio? Modify my cylinder head or change pistons?
  • Will my facet fuel pump be man enough or do I need something different?
  • Do I need a HIF44 turbo carb?

To lower the compression ratio I would get a perpose modified head suitable for a turbo. There is someone on here or the turbo mini forum who produces these:). If you got that I don't know the combination of piston and head because you could lower the CR too much. But defiantly do not get a thicker head gasket...

The facet pump should be fine, what type do you have? The boxy one or the barrel one??

Hmm, i'm not 100% sure to be honest. I think it's the boxy one. Yeah, it's definitely the box shaped one on second thoughts.

I forgot to mention that if anyone has any of the parts that I need then be sure to give me a shout.

That type should be fine, as you are still using a carb. If you were throwing thousands at the engine I would get the barrel type ones as they offer constant pressure, instead of having variable pressure. But it shouldn't be any issues:)

Can anyone shed any light on the clutch issue? It would be interesting to hear what clutch people are running with 130bhp plus.

The reason to update your clutch is because it can slip when a huge amount of power is put through it. For 130 brake I would use a race clutch plate and a grey (race) pressure plate, with a lightened / balanced flywheel and back plate. But this isnt from experience with a turbo, so it could be overkill:)

Thanks for the input AD, but I'm running a verto setup. Does anyone on here use an RTS clutch?

I recently asked a few questions on this and got a lot of very helpful information in return.

I was pointed to this website, have a proper read through it and you will learn a lot.

www.turbo-mini.com

To lower your CR there are a fair few options.

Dished pistons, pocketed head and finally a de-comp plates. The last being the least favoured.

Some engines came with dished pistons as standard and as "Yoda" on here told me the other week if you can get your hands on one of them then you are halfway there. I belive that the SPi head has larger pockets than the standard ones, and i would guess that the MG Turbo may also have larger pockets. So in short a larger pocket on the head and dished pistons will reduce your CR. Artful Dodger is thinking of TurboPhil, you should be able to find him via the link below.

Another good site for used parts is

Turbominis.co.uk

I think that is quite possibly the extent of my turbo knowledge!

Might be an idea to ask for this to be moved to the Forced Induction section? Probably get a better response.

also noticed a lot of people say HIF44 carb and had the same question as you, is this carb the only carb useable or are there any other carbs which can be used?? (webber etc)
