The rule of thumb I use is

Running in an engine 1200 to 1500 miles
Running in brakes or new clutch 300miles

Probably a load of complete rubbish but had never let me down :P

that's pretty much how i've always done it. generally do about 300 road miles and always try to do it as one run.

if you spend 1200 miles of gentle driving you're going to end up with some nice shiny polished bores Posted Image

Agree, long runs so it gets up to temperature & plenty of throttle but keep the revs down.

i run mine in the way that the tick over half throttle and full throttle way, not saying it the right way but seems to work and be fast, but does proberly reduce engine life, but the last 1380 lasted 30k kicking just over 110 bhp

In one run, at around 30-40% of the throttle pedal depressed let the engine rev in 4th gear to 6500 and let it drop down to 2500rpm without taking gear out. Repeat 15 times. Do that with the cheapest 20-50w oil you can find. After the 15th time you are all set, change oil and filter, I suggest Motul 10-50w or Castrol 10-60w. It's very important first time you fire up the engine to let it iddle for 10-15 minutes at 2200-2500rpm, without letting it drop bellow that. Cheers,

I run mine softly in for about 400 miles going below 3500rpm
Then after that slowly built up

Just run it fairly normally with no full-on acceleration and not letting the revs drop too low when the engine is under load.
After about 200 miles it'll be run in.
With new rings and honed bores you don't want to be too gentle.
I've had a competition engine with new rings and a light hone and after a regular re-build, when I changed the cam, it was on the rolling road after only 40 road miles. That caused no problems at all despite a full power run at 6500 rpm.
