1990 mini checkmate 998cc stage 1

Still investigating my carburettor problem.

HS4 dismantled and cleaned.

Just a couple of queries;-

1) I used 5W-30 Castrol Magnatec in the damper - would this be ok? 20W-50 I think is usual

2) There is no adjustment on my chamber float. Its the later plastic float with a spring loaded cut off valve - is this correct? Haynes say bend the metal tab but mine has no tab

Cheers

Apparentley the non adjustable float is a later replacement type so looks like thats ok.

Just need comment on oil now - otherwise will need to go out and buy some 20W-50

Cheers

2)
On later carbs you arent adjusting the float bowl, you adjust needle valve height by using washers.
Strange hynes didnt menion this O_O

Hope this helps:

1)
Theres no winning formula for dashpot oil, it has effect on mixture enrichement under accelleration and piston raise, too thick and accelartion will be slow, too thin and car will hesitate under acceleration.
If you had the car rolling roaded after the stg1 kit, stick with the oil used by the operator.

Great vid - thats how haynes says to do it. But my float doesnt have any metal tab to adjust its all plastic. Looking on minispares site this is the type i have and it says non adjustable.

Re the dashpot oil this was refilled on rolling road - I guess with 20W-50 I have only since topped up with 5W-50
Thats good enough for me - going to pop out and get some 20W-50 from halfords

Cheers

SU damper oil is just SAE30 engine oil, the proper A-series engine oil.
What oil are you using in your engine? That will be good in your dashpot.
20w50 does not sound a good option for damper oil in the winter though, better to try 10w40 or even 3in1 oil.

OK all done with 20W-50 - although I had to buy 5 litres! Will come in handy.

Car runs sweet so hopefully job done.

Jaydee - Used Halfords 20W-50 Classic Oil when I did oil change - none left of that thos so topped dashpot up with magnatec last time i did it. See my other post car wouldnt start the other day hence the carb overhaul. Had a trawl around internet and 20W-50 seemed to be the choice

I think tho I will buy some of the pucker stuff as link above - cant go wrong then

Cheers for all help
