recently got my mini engine rebuilt and rebored to a 1330 with twin su carbs i filled the tank the other day with £35 i have only drove 22 miles in it and the fuel gauge is reading about quarter tank i think there is something amiss somewhere along the line. any suggestions or help will be great, i know when i had a bit of body work done the guy took tank to one side i think it was laid on its side in boot could there be fuel in float hence wrong reading or am i completly wrong thanks

Was it rolling roaded?
Depending on engine spec it will be thirsty on fuel if you have a lead foot, but that sound like you've been doing a track day!
Also try to work out how much fuel you actually have in the tank when you fill up and after a good run, fuel gauges are not really accurate..

The only way to check is to completely fill the tank, drive it X number of miles and then re-fill it. Divide the distance by the fuel used and you then have an accurate figure for consumption. Does the gauge read full before the tank is, or empty when there is still fuel in it?

Gauges are rarely accurate so it really is important to know roughly what the gauge is indicating and essential to know when you are almost dry.

I've been using a long stick to check my fuel gauge, mark it and put it in the filler neck.

i will try and gauge it like you say when i filled it the pump was clicking but when key was in it registered not full , surely even though its not rolling roaded i should get more miles than that i thought at least 25-30 mpg

my gauge is accurate when you get used to it but it will never hit the full line, is that what you're saying? that when topped up the gauge doesn't hit the top line?

Have you checked the plugs for colour? If it really is running that rich then the plugs are likely to be pretty black.

Also do you have a fuel filter fitted just before the carbs? It only takes a small bit if dirt to cause the carb to flood and this will also give excessive fuel consumption (and you may also smell the petrol...)

Also check float settings in the carbs. Might be throwing petrol down the return pipe?

If the petrol gauge reads max when you ground the sensor wire then this means it is working as it should be.
