Just got car (1976) back from paint shop, and asked they weld and paint over the previous bodge door mirror holes. I wanted to fit a clamp on mirror, like an overtaking mirror usually seen on the A pillar strip.

I fitted one to A pillar but it vibrates too much to be any good (I am a daily motorcyclist so know about poor mirrors!) so I removed it. I like the clean look of having no door mirrors. I have a rear view mirror which is fine for me combined with manual shoulder glances.

Will this suffice mot though? I see lots of older minis and other cars that have been restored and only have an internal rear view mirror. I guess I can fit the clamp on A pillar mirror for mot and then remove if it does get flagged up.

From the MOT Testers Manual

Obligatory mirrors are
a. an exterior mirror fitted to the offside (right-hand side when seated in the
drivers seat), or

b, an exterior mirror fitted to the
nearside fleft hand side when seated In the drivers seat), or

c. an interior mirror.

All goods vehicles
must have two mirrors, one of which must be option 'a'.

Passenger vehicles with no more than 7 passenger seats first used before 1 August 1978 must have any one of the above options.

So you don't need external mirrors at all. I don't have them on my 1973 car and have never had any problems.

Thanks fellas. I replaced the interior with a nice chrome one, but its quite useless when in use, very distorting indeed. Put the original one with sucker back on which covers a wider range. Still need to get those "eyes in the back of head" my old man spoke of....

Surely just wanting to drive safely will tell you that you NEED external mirrors? A little Mini is very vulnerable amongst imbeciles in SUVs and white vans, and one way of staying alive is to be fully aware of what is going on around you. It is not just about passing the MOT.

I find using the rotating function of the thing stuck on my shoulders helps me see what's to the left and right of me, especially the things that have sneaked into the blind spots that mirrors do not help with.

if you drive faster than everyone else you dont need to know whats behind you as its not going to catch up, in this situation the only thing youl need to know about is the cars with blue flashy lights on but youl see the lights and hear the sirens though O_O

by the way this is a joke

Yep, as I said in my first post I am a daily London and outer motorcylist so used to crap mirrors and using that big round thing between my shoulder to good effect..! Even when I had the door mirrors fitted, the near side could never come round enough to allow correct use of it anyway.
