I have just bought a cooper mpi 2000. Are they supposed to have three keys? I have one for the ignition, another for the door locks and a third smaller key for the boot lid.

My '94 has, but there's differences in the MPi's. Sounds likely though.

Actually, as Leroy says the norm. is ignition / locks / petrol. A different boot lid might mean it's had a different lock at some point but if it works that's the important thing :P

A separate fuel cap key is the norm. If you have three keys, one of which is soley for the boot, then I'd be worried about how you're gonna open the fuel cap!!

Ok just checked. One key does ignition only, another does boot lid only and the third does door locks and fuel cap. Phew!

very strange that the fuel cap key does the door locks as well, what does your petrol cap look like.
the normal key situation is the big one for ignition the small one with a straight top edge for door and boot locks and the medium one with grooves on both sides for petrol cap

It's all black and sticks out with the key hole and that's it. The medium key you describe does the doors and fuel cap on mine! The keys are exactly as you describe. While we are on this subject the passenger door lock has clearly never been used and seized solid. You can't even get a key in it. Any tips on freeing it up?

Isn't the fuel cap key a "double sided key" whereas the door and boot locks a "single sided key" if that makes sense?

Have you tried the small key in the doors?? Maybe the locks are just worn and anything will work??

Just a thought
