Hi have fitted a hs4 to a friends car today with new standard exhaust and cast manifold, the idle seams to go up and down between 1000 and 1500 when i turn the idle screw it still does it. It was previously fitted with an hif with seperate manifolds but had no connection to the tappet case breather, i have re connected this with an old piece of pipe which is not a tight fit to the carb could this be causing the erratic idle also had no new gaskets for the carb to manifold sanwich block and used gasket sealant !

Yes it could,

What you describe sounds like "hunting" which is a symptom of a weak fuel mixture. The breather connection has more effect when it sees more of the manifold vacuum so sort out any leaking before you adjust the mixture or you'll over compensate for when it really matters, under load, to get it running right at idle.
