I need to take my wheels off but I think the nuts are the locking type, the can be slightly rattled with fingers but I don't know how to get then off. Do I need a special socket? Or how can I get then off?

If you haven't got the locking wheel nut key there are several ways of removing them, often garages will have tools to break them!

Post up a pic and someone will confirm they are locking wheel nuts

Unusual to have all nuts locking, is this what you are saying ??

I know some of the nuts have a chrome cover that can be loose. But a normal socket removes them.

the locking nuts I've seen are usually just a different edge to them that a special socket fits

They might be normal nuts, its just strange how they rattle, ill get some pics in a bit

Yeah, there just covers but are very stuck, I've just got one off basically jumping on the breaker bar.

Sounds very much like standard Rover eight spoke alloy nuts, (as below) if so these have an alloy outer casing that tends to be slightly loose. You don't need to remove them to get at the steel nuts underneath (they're not actually supposed to be removable, although they do have a habit of falling off /coming off in your hand), just put the socket/ wheel brace straight over the top of the cover and undo the nut. If you remove the casings you will only have to find a way of reattaching them afterwards, or buy yourself new nuts.

I had them nuts on my mini and the cap bit just falls off! Naff design but they come off OK

Ah, I just didn't want to break anything but there the ones in the picture, still leading and that's one to remember haha.
