This CHIPnTRAC GPS tracker was recently featured in Modern MINI magazine (Sep-Oct 2012 page 64) it has a one off cost of £149 and is apparently quite popular with classic car owners for diy installation.
More details here:
http://www.rbs-prope...tracker_50.html

Stockade GPS Security Tracker: A self-monitoring unit which uses the GPS navigational system to determine its position and then communicates this information using text messaging to up to five authorised mobile phones. You can dial up the unit and it will reply with a text message giving its GPS co-ordinates; or you can set it to inform you if it moves outside a given geographical area. The only costs in addition to the purchase price will be the cost of a SIM card for the tracker and your network's charges for text messages.

When you park your vehicle, just text an instruction to Stockade and if the vehicle moves you will receive a text message on your phone. Thereafter you can check the vehicle's whereabouts by calling the tracker, which will reply by text message with its new co-ordinates. If your vehicle has been stolen, you can inform the police, give them the details and let them do the rest.

Any thoughts on this system for protecting/ tracking a classic Mini?......as they now seem so vunerable to theft these days, especially out and about in everyday use when parked alongside far more secure modern cars.

I wonder if they would be open to the idea of a group buy? It says they do discounts for clubs.

Just got one of these for my Mini £35.75

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2ec199d829

just got to figure a way to wire it in so it's self charging - so I don't have to keep swapping the battery

does all the things the more £xpensive one does & you can eavesdrop in on the car

Ideal for me as it's still a project for a few years yet

I like the price - but have to figure a way for it to charge itself on a 12v battery

I looked at something similar a while back then found out through a bit of research they are so easy to block and if someone wants to steal your car all they have to do is cover the gps antenna with a sheet of baking foil and it blocks the signal. It seems high end sports cars fitted with similar devices that were stolen to order, the crooks covered the car with a foil blanket then hoisted them away.

What we really need is stiffer laws that cut fingers and hands off, then you will see the crime rate plummet.

:)
