Hi guys...

When I bought the car it came with a Stage 1 Kit so I'm not sure where it was purchased from.

It has a Freeflow manifold and a Maniflow single-box side exit exhaust.

The car is a 1973 1275GT.

The problem is that with the engine in place and the manifold connected as normal, there doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the exhaust and the rod-change mechanism (see picture).

There is an adapter (L71) between the manifold and the long exhaust pipe, but no amount of twisting and turning of this can improve the clearance beyond that shown below.

I've spent hours fiddling with it - any ideas or is this normal?

Thanks again for your help and advice.

I'd make sure you havent fitted it wrong way round but got no car to check atm.
Anyway slacken exhaust mountings and move it to get the clearance, theres about 5mm to gear rod box and 5 to seat belt mounting..

have you tried adjusting the rear hangers if there not in the correct position it could pull the exhaust to one side

Thanks for your prompt replies!

It is a great comfort for a 'newbie' like me to be able to bounce problems like this off you guys and get such a quick response!

I'll get the front of the car up in the air again, take it all off and have another goo...

BRB! ;D

Well, I'm sure I haven't got it (the adapter?) the wrong way round...

I've got the left hand side (see picture) connected to the manifold...

The only position in which it points directly towards the rear of the car (i.e. not up or down) is when it is lined up as per the first picture...

Even without fitting the rest of the exhaust it is clear that it is not going to clear(!) the rod mount bracket.

Any more ideas?

The link pipe os for when using a short downpipe (the one to use with Y piece type LCB manifolds)
Connect downpipe and link pipe to the manifold in a way they form an 'S' shape around the rod change box, pipes will go on left side (looking from the front of the car)
A pic would make it easier but i cant somehow upload pics from my phone doh

I have just bought an almost identical setup (centre exit). It isn't fitted yet so I have laid it out on the floor. I can get it to point in the right direction with the link pipe in either way around. The way you seem to have it looks the best way around for clearance. How far have you pushed the link pipe on? There seems to be quite a bit of scope to slide it back and forth and possibly gain a bit of space.

Thanks for all the replies!

I spent all day yesterday under the car trying to get a good fit...

The only way to get even close was to push the link pipe on as far as it will go (encouraged by a hammer). But that still didn't provide enough clearance past the rod-change housing bracket.

I started to wonder if the manifold/link pipe were from another supplier as they don't have the Maniflow badge welded on as the ones on their site do. As I said, the Stage 1 kit came with the car when I bought it so I have no idea where the previous owner sourced the parts from...

So I called Maniflow and had a long conversation with Chris there - extremely helpful.

Maniflow say that the Freeflow manifold isn't really designed for a 1275 anyway so I decided to bite the bullet and order a LCB (see picture) which should be shipped out to me today.

At least I'll be sure then that the Manifold and exhaust are a matching set.

I'll re-kindle this thread when it arrives next week!

Thanks again for all your replies...

My free flow definitely has the maniflow badge on, so that could well be the problem. Good luck

Thanks!

Yes, after spending hours on the car and the Intermong I started to notice the little badge.

Hopefully that will be the problem...

Thanks!

I've ordered the LCB now tho so don't get wet on my account!

I'll take a side-by-side comparison picture when I get it so we can see where (if any) the difference in layout is...
